WHAT IS REIKI?
A Brief Overview

Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. It is administered by "laying on hands" and is based on the idea that an unseen "life force energy" flows through us and is what causes us to be alive. If one's "life force energy" is low, then we are more likely to get sick or feel stress, and if it is high, we are more capable of being happy and healthy.

The word Reiki is made of two Japanese words - Rei which means "God's Wisdom or the Higher Power" and Ki which is "life force energy". So Reiki is actually "spiritually guided life force energy."
Reiki written in Japanese

A treatment feels like a wonderful glowing radiance that flows through and around you. Reiki treats the whole person including body, emotions, mind and spirit creating many beneficial effects that include relaxation and feelings of peace, security and wellbeing. Many have reported miraculous results.

Reiki is a simple, natural and safe method of spiritual healing and self-improvement that everyone can use. It has been effective in helping virtually every known illness and malady and always creates a beneficial effect. It also works in conjunction with all other medical or therapeutic techniques to relieve side effects and promote recovery.

An amazingly simple technique to learn, the ability to use Reiki is not taught in the usual sense, but is transferred to the student during a Reiki class. This ability is passed on during an "attunement" given by a Reiki master and allows the student to tap into an unlimited supply of "life force energy" to improve one's health and enhance the quality of life.

Its use is not dependent on one's intellectual capacity or spiritual development and therefore is available to everyone. It has been successfully taught to thousands of people of all ages and backgrounds.

While Reiki is spiritual in nature, it is not a religion. It has no dogma, and there is nothing you must believe in order to learn and use Reiki. In fact, Reiki is not dependent on belief at all and will work whether you believe in it or not. Because Reiki comes from God, many people find that using Reiki puts them more in touch with the experience of their religion rather than having only an intellectual concept of it.

While Reiki is not a religion, it is still important to live and act in a way that promotes harmony with others. Dr. Mikao Usui, the founder of the Reiki system of natural healing, recommended that one practice certain simple ethical ideals to promote peace and harmony, which are nearly universal across all cultures.

REIKI TREATMENTS
The purpose of a Reiki healing treatment is to increase the body's energies and clear any blockages that might exist. Reiki is usually transferred with the practitioner's hands resting gently above the body in areas corresponding to the various energy centres (chakras) of the body.
Chakra Diagram

Reiki healing energy is provided both to the back and the front of the body since chakras are located on both the front and the back of the body.

Reiki techniques enable a treatment to be given without the client being present (distant Reiki treatment) and are just as effective as in-person treatments. One also doesn't have to be ill to experience the benefits of a Distant Reiki Treatment.

Reiki Treatment
A recipient may experience a wide range of sensations during a Reiki treatment such as gentle tingling, heat, cold, witness visual sensations, or may not feel anything at all. All Reiki treatments are unique.

A Reiki healing treatment is perfectly safe and can be used with traditional medical treatment. Reiki can never do harm as the recipient draws the energy through the practitioner taking only what is required. The Reiki practitioner acts only as a channel for the energy which will go where it is needed. The Reiki treatment will be unique for each person, most leave feeling relaxed. Reiki can be used on many things other than people, for example animals and plants.

After a Reiki treatment one may go through a 21 day cleansing process, where issues from the past and present will be healed on the mental, emotional, spiritual and physical levels. Just because one may not feel anything after a treatment doesn't mean nothing is happening; the healing is taking place on a level other than the physical.

Major life changes and physical healings may take some time. It took time to create the illness, patience and trust will help.

REIKI WORKSHOPS / ATTUNMENTS
This is the process whereby the RM passes on to the initiate the ability to channel the Reiki energy. Without such an attunement whatever healing modality is practiced is not Reiki. Normally an attunement comes with instruction in the various techniques involved in practicing Reiki. However, nowadays this need not be the case, especially with reputed "distance attunements".

The Reiki attunement opens the natural energy channels in the body and after the attunement the student will be able to channel Reiki energy. This ability does not ware off or get lost.

The attunement does not turn the student into a healer. The student merely becomes a vessel for Reiki. The healing is done by the universal life-force energy. It is directed by the universal intelligence and know where and what to heal.

Because of the oral tradition and secrecy that surrounded traditional Reiki teaching, the attunement process can vary from one Reiki Master to another. The same goes for the symbols used in the attunement. This however, does not affect the attunement.

The Reiki attunement is very straight forward and only takes a few minutes. The student might be asked to remove all jewelry, glasses and shoes, depending on the Reiki Masters preferences. Some argue that jewelry and metal in general interferes in the energy flow and stores energy. The argument for removing the shoes is to be more grounded during the attunement.

The student sits on a chair with the feet flat on the floor and with the hands in front, palms together.

It is important to remember that we are dealing with an energy directly connected to creation with an intelligence far beyond our comprehension, so your Reiki Master is probably more guided by intuition than strict procedural guidelines.

Reiki is attracting a lot of people, more and more are attuned to Reiki Masters and some of them are integrating other healing methods with their Reiki healing. It is therefore important to understand that your healing might be different from the Reiki Master that introduced you to it.

There are also a few Reiki Masters who insists that their methods are the only right one or the superior one. All we can do is send them Reiki and ask the Reiki Guides to enlight them.

CHAKRAS
A Chakra is like a spiral of energy, each one relating to the others. Chakra (pronounced sha-kra) is the Sanskrit word for ' wheel '.

There are seven main energy centres (chakras) of the body which resonate with the seven rainbow colours.
If you can imagine the main chakras / energy centres as a set of cogs/wheels, they are rather like the workings of a clock or an engine; each cog /wheel needs to move smoothly and at a similar speed for the clock / engine to work properly.

Thus good health and well being is achieved by a balance of all these energies (or the smooth running of the cogs/wheels).
